Alison Day
I work in within two broad disciplines: analogue photography and botanical illustration.
As a photographer I have documented urban life as reflected in marches of protest and pride. Since taking pictures outside a detention camp near Oxford , through the Poll Tax Years up to the Brexit Debate and The Peoples Vote. In tandom and in contrast to this I spent my visits to my Gran and Aunt walking along the north East Coast taking pictures of the wonderful shoreline. It was when I had a bad road traffic accident that I began to draw again in my studio .
I returned to my botany this time not a scientist but as an artist and since that point have drawn plant life in all its shapes and sizes. My work reflects an understanding and love of plants and the natural world as a whole. I prefer to draw but now work in watercolour as well ( spurred on by a comment at my first exhibition.."cant you colour them in a bit? ") . I also make photograms which straddle the two mediums , and create hand painted flower photograms which were once featured in ITV 60 Minute makeover.
I currently teach in my studio , running classes in Botanical Illustration and Analogue Photography and have been based in the Lewisham Arthouse since 1993 .
