My paintings examine aspects of mental, physical and emotional wellbeing through a variety of subject matter. Currently I am looking at common household plants, which are known for having a positive impact on health and wellbeing. Through painting and drawing I try to understand why we get such pleasure from plants and explore ideas around close observation of nature, simplification and the importance of visual space. I am interested using formal qualities of painting such as form, figure-ground relationships and paint application to create paired down yet visually stimulating paintings.
Previous works deconstructed and reconstructed swimming pool scenes to produce vibrant paintings, collages and prints which aimed to capture the essence of hot summer days spent by the pool or idyllic holidays and elicit the feelings of wellbeing associated with these.
